The Volvo Trucks manufacturing plant in Virginia’s New River Valley has become a model for the company’s core value of environmental care.
The plant, which manufactures all Volvo Trucks sold in North America, has made exceptional progress in reducing energy use, lowering greenhouse gas emissions and increasing recycling throughout the plant. Among their achievements:
- In 2012, NRV became the first facility in the U.S. to earn dual ISO 50001 Energy Management Certification and the Department of Energy’s Superior Energy Performance Standard (platinum level). NRV has also received the Virginia Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award three times.
- In 2013, the plant achieved zero landfill status, which means all waste generated is recycled, composted or converted to electricity.
- In 2014, NRV achieved another sustainability milestone by converting to electricity that is generated 100 percent by landfill gas emitted from facilities in the region.
