The Volvo Trucks manufacturing plant in Virginia’s New River Valley has become a model for the company’s core value of environmental care.
The plant has made exceptional progress in reducing energy use, lowering greenhouse gas emissions and increasing recycling throughout the plant. Among their achievements:
- New equipment such as building automation systems, solar hot waters and infrared heaters is helping reduce energy use throughout the plant.
Wind turbines, solar panels and a passive solar wall have been added to increase use of renewable energy.
More than 87 percent of the waste generated at the plant is recycled.
In 2012, NRV became the first facility in the U.S. to earn dual ISO 50001 Energy Management Certification and the Department of Energy’s Superior Energy Performance Standard (platinum level). NRV has also received the Virginia Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award three times.
