In a frontal collision, the truck will often wedge a car in a deadly trap. To prevent this and to maximise the effect of the car's own crumple zones, Volvo Trucks has developed the Front Underrun Protection System (FUPS).
FUPS is standard on the Volvo FH and Volvo FM models. Using a 200 mm deep crumple zone, penetration into the car's passenger compartment is considerably reduced. FUPS increases the survival rate of the car's passengers. Additionally, the truck bumper is located at the same height as that of a typical car bumper, so that the car's deformation zone can be fully utilised.
