See and be seen

Avoid risky situations. Increase your awareness. And put your traffic safety knowledge to the test.

A lot of us can, from time to time, walk and cycle on autopilot: letting our familiarity with the routes and thoughts of where we’re going, or even our telephones, steal our attention and distract us from what’s happening. The simple fact is that this kind of behavior increases the risk of getting into an accident.

See and be seen is an initiative designed to help young people realize and act on the risks that vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists face in traffic.

With See and be seen, you can get to know how walking or cycling through traffic can put people in danger - and what you can do to avoid it. It’ll teach you ways in which you can spot, and avoid, risky situations, and make sure you’re visible to drivers. Right here on this page, you’ll find links to a training session that puts you in the position of a pedestrian in all kinds of traffic situations and asks – do you know how to see, and be seen?

And if you’re a teacher, or you’d like to use this material to encourage other people to take the training, there’s also a selection of classroom materials available for download.

Why is it so important?

The World Health Organization says that road traffic injuries are a leading cause of death for young people worldwide.  We want to make a positive difference to those statistics. Most accidents are due to human factors such as lack of attention, poor understanding and misjudgment.

Safety has been Volvo Trucks’ priority from the start. We have a clear safety vision; no Volvo truck should be involved in a traffic accident. So in addition to developing innovative safety features for trucks, we also work on other aspects of safety – like knowledge, training, skills and awareness. See and be seen is one of those initiatives.

Awareness is the first step to safety, and it starts with this training. You can do it at home, in the classroom, or wherever – just click on the links below. The information changes depending on whether or not you’re in a country where traffic drives on the right, or the left, so be sure to choose the right one. It takes about 20 minutes in total.
