How the EGR system works

Stage 1
A bleed off valve meters a precise amount of exhaust gas from the exhaust manifold which is reintroduced into the engine's intake for further combustion.

Stage 2
This metered exhaust gas is cooled to an optimal temperature in a heat exchanger (fitted under the turbo) before it is introduced back into the fresh air intake.

Stage 3
The recycled inert exhaust gases are now mixed with the fresh air intake, diluting the available oxygen and also absorbing combustion heat resulting in lower flame temperatures. This significantly reduces the amopunt of Nitrous Oxide (NOx) emissions.
