Guiding you to optimised fuel consumption
Reducing fuel consumption is a must when it comes to economy of a company. But even more so when it comes to environmental issues. At Volvo we believe in the benefits of cleaner technology. It is a mission we take seriously. Just to give you one example: between 1980 and 2001, engine efficiency and the normal fuel consumption, using diesel engines, has decreased by about 30%.

However, besides vehicle and engine design the fuel consumption for goods vehicle transport is dependent on a number of factors, such as load factor, the driver, the equipment and weather conditions.

Volvo has a long experience of engine technology to reduce emissions and fulfil all main legislations from Europe, USA and Japan. Since 2002 an EGR solution has been provided in the USA, a technology that is parallel with the SCR-technology on the European market.

SCR technology
At Volvo Trucks we believe that Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology is the best alternative for complying with the Euro 4 emission legislation. SCR is a well-proven and reliable technology without limitations in horsepower output and it has been in use in Europe since 2004. SCR also represents the most fuel-efficient solution among the techniques available for Euro 4 and Euro 5.

The benefit of the SCR method is that it can be adapted for both Euro 4 and Euro 5 compatibility. For the Euro 5 engine, for instance, more AdBlue is injected in order to further reduce nitrogen oxide levels. For Euro 4, the additive corresponds to about 3-4% of the amount of fuel, and for Euro 5 about 5-7%.

With the present SCR technology, the Volvo engines comply with Euro 5. The solution uses less fuel, offer higher hp and the cooling or oil systems are not affected. But if EGR is needed, that alternative can be supplied as well.

Fuel efficiency
Thanks to efficient combustion in Volvo's Euro 4 and Euro 5 (incentive) engines, these units ensure the most fuel efficient solution among competing technologies, which in itself is a gain both financially and environmentally. Although the catalytic reduction process requires an additive in the form of a fluid named AdBlue, with current estimates for the price of AdBlue the overall operating cost will not increase compared to  Euro 3 specification.
