Rear axle

Getting the power down - whatever the job
The Volvo FM is available with no less than 10 different rear axles - solo and tandem axles with single reduction or hub reduction. All the rear axles have the rear axle casing cast in nodular iron which results in a compact design offering high ground clearance. The wheel bearings are maintenance free unit bearings.

A differential lock is fitted as standard to the rear axle. It increases get-you-there ability when the surface is slippery and it offers little traction. Tandem axles also have a differential lock between the axles.

Gearbox-driven power take-offs
There are gearbox-driven power take-offs for most applications - high-revving and low-revving with flange-driven or direct-driven hydraulic pumps. There are also variants with dual drive. All the PTOs are of a robust design to ensure a long service life.

Powerful power take-off for Powertronic
The Powertronic transmission is available with a power take-off designed for direct fitted hydraulic pumps or propshaft drive. Drive is taken directly from the engine - from the engine's crankshaft end via the transmission's torque amplifier housing. The power take-off can be in operation both on the move and when the vehicle is at a standstill. As much as 850 Nm of torque is available.

All-wheel drive
The Volvo FM is available with all-wheel drive in 4x4 and 6x6 configuration for enhanced off-road capability. It is a lightweight system featuring a transfer gearbox and driven front axle with hub reduction. All-wheel drive can be combined with all the engines in the FM range and with both manual gearboxes and Powertronic.
