Civic Associations

Through civic associations, Volvo Trucks can have a positive impact in the communities where our employees live and work.  For example, we’re active in the local Chamber of Commerce at each of our locations, which helps us promote a strong business environment for community residents.

Christina's Smile

christinas smile

For 24 years, the Christina’s Smile organization has provided free dental care for children in need across the nation. For the past 11 of those years, the mobile clinic has made the Volvo Group campus in Greensboro one of its stops.

In August 2013, volunteer dentists, hygienists and dental assistants treated more than 100 local children, most of them students in the Guilford County Schools, during the clinic’s three-day stop at Volvo. For many of these children, their annual appointment with Christina’s Smile is the only dental care they receive.

Named after founder Dr. Richard Garza’s daughter, Christina’s Smile follows the PGA tour each year from city to city in two mobile dental clinics towed by Volvo trucks. Since its founding, Christina’s Smile has provided $24 million worth of free dental care to children across the country, and $1 million of that care was delivered at the Volvo site.

Rolling Thunder – Ride for Freedom rally

ride for freedom

For the past 21 years, the New River Valley Plant in Dublin, VA, has participated in the Rolling Thunder – Ride for Freedom rally honoring America’s fallen or missing military heroes. This Memorial Day weekend tradition includes a patriotic ceremony at the plant, followed by the departure of hundreds of motorcyclists who travel from Dublin to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC, to join with nearly a half million other participants.

As part of the tradition, NRV employees decorate a Volvo highway tractor with patriotic images, badges from each branch of the military, and graphics depicting the Southwest Virginia community.

To help address pressing needs in our local communities, we conduct annual United Way fund-raising campaigns at each of our locations in North America.  These employee contributions, along with corporate gifts, help support programs and activities in the areas of health, education and financial well-being.
