When it comes to vehicle safety, it’s no surprise that the driver is the most important part of the equation. Unfortunately, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, drivers spend more than half their time distracted by other things – cell phones being the most common. This inattention contributes to 8,000 crashes in the U.S. every day.
Finding ways to change these types of behaviors will save lives, and Volvo Group researchers completed a study last year funded by the National Transportation Research Center that focused on drivers of heavy-duty trucks. Using a vehicle cab simulator, Volvo demonstrated how driver behavior could be monitored using a small camera on the dash to track eye movements. If the driver’s eyes closed or strayed from the road for too long, indicating fatigue or distraction, the seat back vibrated automatically as an alert.
Volvo will continue to support research and other efforts promoting safer driver behavior and safer roads for everyone.
