Save fuel on hills
with I-See

As you approach a slope in the new Volvo FH, I-See is recalling information about its gradients in order to manage your speed and gear changes with maximum efficiency. The technology is a major breakthrough – letting you save up to 5 percent fuel.

“If the truck hasn’t driven the road before it simply downloads the data from the I-See cloud,” explains Anders Eriksson. “And if the information is missing there, the truck will remember the gradients while you are driving and upload them – so they’re in the database for next time. This way you will soon have access to all the fuel saving data you could possibly need.”

Take advantage of every hill

I-See works out how to make the most of the hill’s kinetic energy and passes this on to the intelligent transmission, I-Shift. In all, it carries out six different manoeuvres to reduce fuel consumption. For instance, it accelerates in time to use as much gravity as possible – avoiding unnecessary use of the engine.

“This is the type of thing skilled drivers already do. But if you’re driving a truck for eight hours, you’re not likely to do it in quite the same way. With I-See managing the slopes you can concentrate on other aspects of the drive instead,” says Anders Eriksson.

Together with the cruise control’s most efficient setting, fuel consumption can be reduced by up to 5 percent on stretches where I-See is used. How much this amounts to depends on how much you use I-See. And since it’s self teaching, no maps or updates are needed. This, too, saves money.

Carry on saving with Fuel Advice

To maximize savings, Volvo’s Driver Development programme sharpens fuel saving techniques among drivers of all levels. But to sustain the savings over time, nothing beats the continual follow-up and advice of a personal advisor.

Transport solutions manager, Jarkko Aine, outlines the new Fuel Advice service: “The key to long term savings lies in systematic follow-up. Fuel Advice allows driving techniques such as speed adaptation and gear utilisation to be evaluated using data from the truck. It works as a subscription for as long as you need it. After each analysis, a report is conveyed to the driver with actions to take. And the fuel advisor who creates the report can be contacted if a query comes up.”

A Fuel Champion

The new service consists of Fuel Coaching, a Fuel Management Toolbox and Fuel Management Support. The idea is to provide the operator with the resources and continuity needed to sustain the fuel savings over time. “The best results are achieved when operators appoint their own Fuel Champion – somebody who can read the reports and pass on the feedback to the drivers,’’ says Jarrko Aine. “This is what maximizes the savings, month after month.’’
