When will a diesel engine be the latest news in methane gas technology? This summer – when the first serial produced FM MethaneDiesel trucks start working for their hauliers on three markets. From day one, the new Volvo trucks will be unique in using gas as fuel in long haul transports, opening the door to better fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions on the open road.
TO MAKE THE MOST OF GAS WE USE IT IN A DIESEL ENGINE
Our highly successful Euro 5 diesel technology is far ahead of conventional gas engines for efficiency and drivability. Yet compared with diesel, man-made biogas can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 70 percent. So how do you get the best of both worlds?
We start with a small amount of diesel to ignite the methane gas. This gives the full benefit of the diesel engine – saving up to 25% gas compared with conventional spark-ignited gas trucks. Then as much methane is injected into the cylinders as possible while maintaining the smooth performance expected from a diesel.
THE JOURNEY FOR GAS HAS JUST BEGUN
Until now, longer journeys have been unthinkable for trucks running on gas. But the efficiency boost of our methane-diesel technology increases the operational range to 500 km, and will gradually increase towards 800 km. On top of this you know you can always run in pure diesel mode if gas is temporarily unavailable.
