Cab safety

High safety level

An elegant new safety steering leather-trimmed steering wheel. Height and angle can be easily adjusted via a foot-pedal and it also folds out of the way to permit more convenient entry. The steering wheel can be specified with built-in controls for the audio system and mobile phone. Inertia-reel seat belts with separate sensors that monitor sudden movements by both the vehicle and the belt itself. A seat belt that is integrated with the seat so it is always properly positioned across your body and an SRS drivers airbag are supplied as standard to reduce injury in the event of a severe frontal impact.

Better all-round vision in the dark

The optional new static cornering lights give the driver far better close up visibility by lighting up the vehicle's intended path at junctions when the indicator is turned on.

Crashworth cabs

The most common truck accident scenarios resulting in severe driver injury are a full frontal collision or a roll-over. When the cab is struck by an exterior object, its primary task is to transfer energy backwards in order to maintain sufficient survival space inside.

At Volvo Trucks we test all our cabs to the toughest legal demands and beyond, including our own front barrier test. All our cabs meeting Swedish cab strength standards - the toughest in the world.

Absorbing the energy of the impact

There are tremendous forces at work in case of an accident. The power exposed to your body is likely to be at least twice the weight of your entire body. A person weighing 100 kg is exposed to a force equal to four tonnes when travelling at 50 km/h. That is why the cab interior needs to be energy-absorbent, in order to yield to the impact of the human body.

In all our cabs the steering wheel and the dashboard are energy-absorbent, as are the trims at knee height. All upholstery fabrics are also made of flameproof materials.

In addition, interior accessories such as the refrigerator and coffee maker are designed to be firmly attached to the cab structure. This ensures that they stay in place in case of collision or emergency braking manoeuvres.
