EPA SmartWay Program

The goal of the EPA SmartWay Transport Partnership is to save fuel and reduce harmful emissions from heavy-duty trucks. Volvo Trucks is committed to the SmartWay mission and has developed a comprehensive package of SmartWay components for its VN line, including EPA 2010-certified engines and aerodynamic enhancements.

According to the EPA, freight trucks and locomotives consume 35 billion gallons of diesel fuel each year, and burning this fuel produces over 350 million metric tons of carbon dioxide. Since 2004, SmartWay partners have saved 55 million barrels of oil – the equivalent of taking more than 3 million cars off the road for an entire year. The amount of money saved on fuel is estimated at $6.5 billion.
