Stop Look Wave

In accidents involving heavy trucks, more than one quarter of the people who die are vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists. Children are particularly vulnerable on the roads.

A contributing factor in many accidents between heavy trucks and vulnerable road users is that the truck driver does not notice the pedestrian or cyclist in time.

With the Stop Look Wave initiative, we want to make a real difference within traffic safety. We want to help children understand how to act safely in traffic, especially when they are close to a truck. Even if you have seen the truck, it is not certain that the truck driver has seen you.

It is not the responsibility of the children to make sure that accidents do not happen. The responsibility lies with the drivers, truck manufacturers, and infrastructure providers. Stop Look Wave is not about responsibility, it is about spreading knowledge. Knowledge to enable a safer interaction between different groups of road users.

This is how to do it

In the Stop Look Wave training the children can learn about different traffic situations and what to think about when crossing a road. The training material can be downloaded for free further down.

Three important words make out the core of the training:

If you are going to cross the street, stop at the crossing and wait until there are no vehicles approaching.

Look both ways. If a vehicle stops, seek eye contact with the driver.

Wave to the driver and wait for the driver to wave back before you cross the road.

Since Stop Look Wave was launched in 2015, it’s reached children in more than 30 countries worldwide. It increases awareness, encourages safe behaviour and can help save lives.

About the initiative

This short film has been made to explain exactly why it’s so important to stop, look and wave, as well as introducing the concept of road traffic safety in a fun, memorable and – above all else – kid-friendly way.

Download the videos, in both left-hand-driving and right-hand-driving versions, below, or check it out on our YouTube channel.

Stop, look, wave… and dance!

As part of Stop Look Wave we’ve made this song and music video to help spread the message. Can you get a classroom full of kids up on their feet and dancing to the song?

Downloadable teaching resources

The resources include an activity mat that can be downloaded and printed out, as well as figures: great for if you want to run a lesson on the subject, or just ask kids to practice their road safety skills on their own.

Your road safety licence

A fun driver’s licence can be printed out and awarded to every student who learns how to stop, look and wave.
